PUZZLER! This week's puzzler comes to us from the world of fiber arts. A woman decides she's going to knit her nephew a pair of mittens. She's got exactly one ball of yarn — one. It's the last ball of that colour in town, the dye lot's been discontinued, and she is not about to send that kid out into the world wearing two slightly different shades of green like some kind of amateur. Here's her problem. She has no idea how far that ball is going to go. If the first mitten eats up two-thirds of the yarn, she's got one beautiful mitten and one very sad thumb. Now, she could weigh the yarn and split it in half — except her kitchen scale is dead. She could measure it out by the yard, but that means unwinding the whole ball onto the living room floor, and she is lazy. She does none of that. She sits down, starts knitting, and comes up with two mittens that match perfectly — same size, same cuff, same everything — and the very last inch of that yarn goes into the very last stitch of the second mitten. The question is: what did she do?
